The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) alum Lukey Healy ‘14, released his third graphic novel, THE CON ARTISTS, on June 7 with Drawn and Quarterly.
A note from his publisher: “Luke Healy’s playful, hilarious third graphic novel uses crisp lines and physical comedy to portray an uneasy friendship between two young men on the cusp of adulting. Snippets from Frank’s middling stand-up routines are punctuated by the subtle farce of Healy’s mise-en-scène and the lively, at times scathingly pointed, banter of old friends. The Con Artists is a stylish character study that asks the question of who fools who once everyone is off-camera.”
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, VERMONT: The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) will hold its 16th commencement ceremony on Saturday May 7, its first in-person commencement ceremony since May 2019. This year’s speaker is Trung Le Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American comic book artist and writer from Minnesota.
Trung was born in a refugee camp somewhere in the Philippine province of Palawan. Trung’s first original graphic novel, The Magic Fish, was published in 2020 through Random House Graphic, an imprint of Penguin Random House and went on to win two Harvey Awards. Trung has also contributed work for DC Comics, Oni Press, Boom! Studios, and Image Comics. He currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota and raises three very spoiled hens. He is fond of fairy tales, kids’ cartoons, and rom-coms of all stripes.
The Center for Cartoon Studies’ ceremony will be held in Northern Stage’s The Barrette Center for the Arts.*
A thesis exhibit featuring original work by the graduating class will be on exhibit throughout the month of May in the CCS Gallery in the Colodny Building at 94 South Main Street, open Monday-Friday from noon-4 pm.

APPLE CRUSH by Lucy Knisley ’09 is out now via Random House! The much anticipated sequel to Stepping Stones and the second book in the Peapod Farm middle grade graphicseries, Kirkus Reviews describes APPLE CRUSH as “Warm, fortifying, and cozy—like a drink of apple cider.” Lucy is the prolific creator of many graphic memoirs that cover a range of topics including travel (French Milk, An Age of License, and Displacement), her wedding (Something New), her pregnancy and giving birth (Kid Gloves), and being a new parent (Go to Sleep/I Miss You). Her food memoir, Relish, was a New York Times bestseller.
It was also selected by Pop Culture Classroom as a finalist for the 2022 Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards!
Several of The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) faculty and alumni contributed comics to this very important project which showcases the real-life stories of migrant farmworkers in their own words who are living and working in Vermont, most of whom are from Central America.
“Much of the work on Vermont dairy farms is done by people from Latin America. Over a thousand migrant laborers from Mexico and other countries milk cows, fix tractors, shovel manure, and take care of calves in our state… We invite Vermont communities to take part in Vermont Reads 2022 by planning projects centered around The Most Costly Journey and its themes of migration, farming, mental health, cartooning, family, labor movements, and the Latinx experience, among others.” – Vermont Humanities
